Room was good size & comfortable, bathroom was large with nice amenities. At our historic Chattanooga hotel, we specialize in 1920s splendor while catering to modern tastes. The Read House is a dazzling Jazz-era gem with the trappings of a new hotel.

Location

Until it was her suitor who turned to other women and abandoned Annalisa at the hotel. In this version of the tale, poor Annalisa Netherly died of a heartbroken heart in Room 311. The final construction was a ten-floor, Georgian-style hotel that paid homage to its predecessor. The architects did their best to incorporate some of the fine decor that the first Read House Hotel had boasted. Some pieces, however--like the massive mahogany bar--were unfortunate victims of time and were never replaced.

How much does it cost to stay at The Read House, Downtown City Center?

The elegant lobby sets the tone for your Read House experience. Marble floors, the hotel’s original crystal chandeliers, and plush 1920s-style furniture make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The uniforms of the hotel personnel stay true to the period. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen hotel housekeeping with a knee-length black dress with a ruffled apron.

'25 - New Building Begins

The Manor House is the newer part of the hotel, and while you can tell what’s newer while viewing the building from the exterior, the interior transitions are seamless. If you like a hotel that packs some history (and maybe a ghost or two), then Read House is for you. It started as a rooming house in the 1840s and has also been a  drugstore that sold Coca-Cola and rented rooms before assuming the name of Read House in 1926. Welcome to a blog series delving into the intriguing historical gems scattered around Chattanooga. Explore the stories that make up this city’s rich past and form its culture of today. A venerable roster of dignitaries and notables paraded through its hallowed corridors.

'94 - Lost History

In 1926, the Read House re-opened after a major transformation, the older parts of the hotel were stripped away and ten stories were added, with a design scheme influenced by the Palmer House in Chicago. During this period, it became a popular destination for travelers and was known for its luxurious accommodations and fine dining in the city’s center. She said VW workers saw the governors’ open letter as “an empty threat and a cynical ploy,” and they ignored it.

The White House issued a statement from President Joe Biden congratulating the UAW. Nelson is trying to secure an industry-leading contract at United Airlines that she can use to court Delta crews. In the meantime, crews at startup Breeze Airways, many of whom live in the South, will vote next month whether to join her union. The Association of Flight Attendants, which has tried and failed to win over cabin crews at Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines, hopes to collect enough signatures to force another election at Delta by year end.

Bar and Billiards

Spending the night in a haunted hotel on a solo trip would not have been my first choice but I came away unscathed. The Read House has 241 guest rooms and suites divided between the Historic Tower, which is the original hotel building, and the newer Manor House. While you can tell what’s newer while viewing the building from the exterior, the interior transitions are seamless. I have nothing negative to say, and I recommend this beautiful hotel in the heart of downtown Chattanooga to all types of travelers who want to be close to the action in downtown Chattanooga.

First Read House Hotel

We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests. The Read House is the longest continuously operating hotel in the southeast, and holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel has endured floods, The Civil War, epidemics, the Great Depression and an ever-changing Chattanooga. Biden criticized six Southern Republican governors, including Bill Lee of Tennessee, who told autoworkers this week that voting for union representation would jeopardize jobs.

However, the UAW is likely to face a tougher test as it tries to represent workers at two Mercedes-Benz plants in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A five-day election is scheduled to start May 13, where the union’s campaign has already become heated. Silverdale Baptist leaders and community members joined the school's student body on the football field to commemorate the groundbreaking Wednesday. Silverdale Baptist Academy broke ground Wednesday on a new academic building, The Commons, as part of an effort to expand the campus and prepare students to be workforce leaders. And, if you’re feeling brave enough, request Room 311 for your own chance to meet the ghost of Annalisa Netherly.

Rutherford B. Hayes, Mexican President Miguel Aleman, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Andrew Jackson all spent nights in the suites. Luminous stars such as Bette Davis, Liberace, and Bob Hope kindled the night's fervor with their brilliance. Even the notorious Al Capone found himself in the hotel's custody, a pause in his tumultuous journey. The merging of the Western and Atlantic Rail Roads in the mid-1800s made Chattanooga much more accessible. Goods could be transported East to West, through Appalachia. With the influx of passengers and goods moving through, the city needed a hotel.

The Read House’s speakeasy-style bar sits just off the lobby and serves lunch and dinner. Like all good speakeasies, the billiard table is tucked in the back behind pocket doors. My door had a privacy feature where I could flip a switch and let housekeeping know not to knock versus having to manually put out a do not disturb sign. Housekeeping did not replace the water, but I got complimentary bottled water from the front desk for the duration of my stay. The premier rooms have more floor space and larger, black and white marble tiled bathrooms. The Read House has 241 guest rooms and suites divided between the Historic Tower and the Manor House.

The water eventually receded, but the building would not last the year, and burned to the ground a short time later. The hotel is gorgeous and we loved both the facilities and the location downtown. A draw when booking is the indoor heated pool advertised, however, it’s not very warm and much in need of a renovation.
